Sign Language for your phone?

A team of American scientists are working around the clock to create technology to enable sign language via your smart-phone. So for those of you that are ‘tech-heads’ and may have a few hearing problems and are always causing a scene shouting when you get a phone call then you will be pleased to hear that this ‘sign language technology’ is coming to a smart-phone near you, very soon well preferably yours.

You may be seeing this technology very soon on the latest mobile phones or if it isn’t available on the handset that you want then you can compare mobile phones to find another one you like but also one that suits your needs, maybe even one of a few free mobile phones.

The engineers at the University of Washington have developed the first device that can convey the American Sign Language over mobile networks, which to say the least is pretty impressive, I suppose they’ll be using the camera’s on the phones to see the signs that they are using.

Speaking about the project, Eve Riskin the project leader said: “This is the first study of how deaf people in the United States use mobile video phones, the point is to provide real-time video cellular communication for deaf people,” says Jessica Tran, a doctoral student working on the mobile ASL project. “We are able to send video over both 3G and Wi-Fi networks at a very low bit rate.”
